EASA requirements for CRM Trainers

This article explains the requirements of EASA Air Ops as they apply to Crew Resource Management Trainers and Instructors. The requirements for CRM trainers are defined by Part ORO/AMC/GM. EASA Air Ops refers to CRM Trainers (CRMT) rather than CRM Instructors (CRMI), the terms are interchangeable. The following is a summary of EASA Air OPS requirements.

CRM Trainer candidates are required to:

  • Complete an operators initial CRM course
  • Complete 40 hours of CRM Trainer Training
    - the GAT CRM Trainers Course fulfils this requirement.
  • Have adequate knowledge of human performance and limitations (HPL), gained by:
    • having obtained a CPL/ATPL with HPL theory, or
    • having followed a theoretical HPL course covering the whole HPL syllabus
      - the GAT CRM HPL course fulfils this requirement.
  • A CRM trainer should be assessed by a CRM trainer examiner (CRMTE), nominated by the operator, when conducting their first CRM training course.

A CRMT assessment is valid for a period of 3 years. Operators who do not have the in-house capability to assess their own Trainers, may use third party providers. - GAT CRMTE fulfil this requirement, GAT provides CRMTE services for a number of UK and international airlines.

Crew Resource Management

Note therefore that CRMT candidates who are cabin crew will need to complete the HPL course, in order to qualify as CRMT. This also applies to pilot candidates who obtained ATPL prior to the introduction of HPL into the ATPL theoretical syllabus. GAT schedules 2 day CRM HPL courses consecutively with CRMT courses, so they may be combined to fulfil this requirement.

For currency of the 3-year validity period, the CRM trainer should:

  • conduct at least 2 CRM training events in any 12-month period
  • be assessed within the last 12 months of the 3-year validity period by a CRM trainer examiner
  • receive a CRM trainer refresher training within the 3-year validity period
    - the GAT CRM Trainers Refresher Course fulfils this requirement

All GAT CRM Trainers and Examiners meet all requirements of EASA and GAT maintains auditable records of compliance which are available to clients.
