Fatigue Risk Management Systems

A Fatigue Risk Management System (FRMS) is a data driven, systematic method to minimise the risks of fatigue related error, based upon scientific principles combined with data collection and analysis. FRMS include systems for fatigue monitoring, crew reporting, and audit and evaluation.

There are competitive advantages for an organisation taking fatigue management beyond simply complying with legislation or adopting minimum requirements. Discovering unique patterns in the workplace associated with fatigue and accidents/incidents allows operators to more effectively manage the relationship between rosters, work cycles, overtime allocation and staff numbers.

An FRMS provides several layers of defence against fatigue related risk. It facilitates the early recognition of potential causes of fatigue and identifies warning signs of fatigue in staff so that countermeasures can be put into place to combat any vulnerability in the operation. An effective FRMS will maintain safety whilst allowing greater operational efficiency.
