Safety Management Systems
ICAO, EASA and FAA require that all aviation operators and maintenance organisations implement a Safety Management System (SMS). A safety management system is a series of defined, organization-wide processes that provide for effective risk-based decision-making. SMS focuses on maximising opportunities to continuously improve the overall safety of the system.
The key processes of an SMS include:
Hazard Identification
A method for identifying hazards related to your organisation.
Occurrence Reporting
A process for the acquisition of safety data.
Risk Management
A standard approach for assessing risks and for applying risk controls.
Performance Measurement
Management tools for analysing whether the organisation’s safety goals are being achieved.
Quality/Safety Assurance
Processes based on quality management principles that support continuous improvement of the organisation’s safety performance.
An effective SMS should support:
- A top-down commitment from management and commitment from all employees to achieve safety performance goals.
- A clear roadmap of what the SMS is and the SMS objectives.
- A culture of open communication throughout the organization.
- An organisational culture of continuous improvement.
This course covers the principles of introducing and maintaining a Safety Management System within an aviation organisation.
The course includes the following:
- How will SMS benefit my organisation?
- How does a Safety Management System differ From QMS?
- How to build a Safety Management System
- What are the key processes of an SMS?
- What are the roles and responsibilities within the SMS?
This course is available at our training centre in the UK and can also be delivered as an in-company course for your organisation at your location. For in-company courses the course programme and duration can be adapted to the roles of different participant groups.
